It is first important to know that there are two main types of cabinets: framed and frameless. Framed cabinet design is associated with the American school of kitchen design. Bordered by a 1 " piece of wood, framed cabinets have doors that "lip" over the frame. These doors can come in standard overlay (partial overlay over the frame), full overlay, and inset (situated within the frame so that the door is flush).

Ever find yourself browsing through the big box harware stores gazing at the new cabinets? Think about how you like the maple cabinets or maybe the white glaze but can't imagine how it might go with the counter top? There might be too many to choose from.

There are different approaches to restaining your kitchen cabinets, depending on your desired results. If you want to stain your cabinets darker than they already are, you can apply a gel stain over the existing finish after some light sanding.
